The 20th Congress of the European Sleep Research Society follows on from the successful meetings in Glasgow (2008), Innsbruck (2006), Prague (2004), Reykjavik (2002) and Istanbul (2000), all of them recognized by the high scientific and medical standards. The Lisbon Congress will keep in line with such tradition, taking into account the particular evolution of the Sleep medicine and Sleep research at present times, and considering the relevance and impact of Sleep upon individual and societal organization. The Convenor and the Local committee are strongly involved in a Congress that, by its quality, warmth and uniqueness, will remain as a good memory in your life.

American Medical Association CME credits for this continuing medical educational activity will be available through Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York. Activities will involve not only sleep medicine clinicians but also sleep technologists, dentists and others interested in sleep medicine. Fellows are encouraged to participate, and there will be Fellow Session on Friday morning where Fellows can present and discuss interesting cases.

Worse still, the inattentiveness associated with sleep deprivation is causing more industrial accidents. Global warming, a significant issue for the modern world, has causal connections to the social activities of energy-consuming humans. In a similar way, sleep can be regarded as a strong influence on the health of mankind and the other organisms that live on our planet. Modern society is now in need of deeper multidisciplinary research on the phenomenon of sleep.
